Green or black staining running vertically down the brickwork below a gutter section is the clearest sign of a joint failure — water is escaping at that point and running down the wall face rather than to the downpipe. Pooling water or moss growth along the gutter base indicates a fall problem. Paint peeling on fascia boards behind the gutterline is an early sign of moisture ingress behind the gutter before rot becomes structural.
Cast iron in reasonable condition is worth repairing — it significantly outlasts uPVC when maintained and looks correct on Bristol's period properties in a way that uPVC never quite replicates. If the sections are sound but joints are failing, targeted repair is good value. If through-corrosion has created holes at the base of multiple sections simultaneously, replacement is more cost-effective. We assess each cast iron system individually rather than defaulting to one recommendation.
If the damp is caused by the guttering — yes, completely and immediately. Before commissioning any internal damp treatment on an upper floor or bedroom wall, check the guttering directly above it. If it's overflowing or leaking against the brickwork at that point, start there. We'll tell you honestly whether the gutter is the cause — and if it is, fixing it costs significantly less than anything that happens on the inside of the wall.
