The Edwardian building era that produced Bishopston's distinctive wide-fronted semis also produced a very particular style of chimney. Lime Mortar Repointing

Cement Pointing on Soft Edwardian Brick
Bishopston's stock brick was chosen for its aesthetic qualities — warm tone, slight variation, the character that gives the area its feel. It is also relatively soft by modern standards. Portland cement mortar is too rigid and too impermeable for this material. The terracotta decorative ridge tile courses that run along the ridge and return around the chimney stack base on Bishopston's Edwardian semis look solid. They're frequently not. When the lime mortar bed beneath them deteriorates — which it does over decades — the tiles begin to move under wind loading. A loose decorative ridge tile on a tall semi above a pavement is a safety concern. We check the stability of every chimney-associated ridge tile course during the drone survey.
The damp patch in my front bay window room — could it be the chimney rather than the window?
Very possibly the bay cheek flashing rather than the chimney itself, but either way it's an external lead failure rather than the window frame. The bay cheek flashing junction between the bay roof section and the main house wall is the most common source of this specific damp pattern in Bishopston.
