Repair makes sense when individual sections or joints have failed while the majority of the cast iron run is still sound and correctly aligned. Cast iron in reasonable condition with active maintenance will outlast any uPVC alternative by decades. If the fascia behind it is also sound and the fall toward the outlet is correct, targeted repair is excellent value.
Replacement becomes the right recommendation when the cast iron has multiple failing sections simultaneously, the internal corrosion has created a pattern of through-holes across several lengths, the brackets have corroded at the fixing point and can no longer hold the weight securely, or the fascia behind it has rotted to the point where a full fascia replacement is needed anyway. At that stage, replacing the full run in matching cast iron while the fascia is off is far more efficient than piecemeal repair.
