Redland's streets — Redland Road, Coldharbour Road, Cranbrook Road, Egerton Road — are lined with Victorian and Edwardian terraces and semis, the vast majority still wearing their original Welsh slate or clay tile roofing.
These roofs are beautiful. They're also 100 to 130 years old, and they have very specific problems that a general roofer without period property experience will either miss entirely or fix with the wrong materials.
Cement where lime mortar should be. Spanish slate where Welsh reclaimed should go. Modern concrete ridge tiles on a Victorian roofline. We see the consequences of these mistakes every week across BS6.
At TD Roofing, we carry reclaimed Welsh slate, work exclusively in lime mortar on period chimneys, and use 4K drone surveys to inspect every roof before we quote — so nothing gets missed and nothing gets guessed at.

From the nail-sick Victorian slate on the long terrace rows of Coldharbour Road to the flat-roofed rear extensions bolted onto Edwardian semis along Egerton Road — every roof in BS6 has its own history and its own problems. We know these streets, we know the property types, and we know exactly what each one needs.
From storm damage across the Cotswold fringes to minor leaks in Bedminster, our rapid-response team is equipped to handle structural emergencies. We provide temporary weathering to stop internal damage before performing a permanent, master-grade repair for any Bristol property.
Stop the cycle of leaking felt roofs. We install Firestone EPDM Rubber and GRP Fiberglass systems across Bristol. These are seamless, cold-applied membranes that are 100% UV resistant and ideal for modern South West extensions, orangeries, and garage conversions.
The chimney is the most common failure point on a Bristol roof. We provide specialized lime mortar repointing, chimney capping, and Code 4/5 lead flashing. Our leadwork isn't just functional; it’s finished to a standard that enhances the character and value of your property.
The ultimate investment in your home’s future. We specialize in full-scale re-roofs using premium clay tiles and natural slate. Our process includes a full timber inspection and the installation of breathable membranes to prevent the "sweating" and dampness common in older Bristol properties.
Bristol’s architectural heritage is built on slate. We are experts in sourcing Welsh and Spanish slate that satisfies conservation area requirements (particularly in Clifton, Redland, and Montpelier). Our slating is hand-dressed and fixed with copper nails to ensure it lasts for the next century.
We perform full replacements using high-grade, maintenance-free uPVC systems designed to withstand the South West’s damp, coastal climate. Our engineered installations include integrated ventilation to prevent loft condensation and eaves protection to stop pest ingress in your roofline.
In a city that faces heavy Atlantic weather systems, your guttering is your home's first line of defense. We don't just clear gutters; we engineer drainage solutions. We specialize in high-capacity uPVC, seamless aluminium, and traditional cast iron systems for period homes.
Natural light is a staple of Bristol’s high-end loft conversions, but a leaking skylight can quickly ruin your interior. As specialists in Velux® window maintenance and installation, we handle everything from seal replacements to full structural glazing upgrades and leak detection.
Beyond residential excellence, TD Roofing Contractors provides industrial-grade solutions for Bristol’s commercial sector. From industrial units in Avonmouth to retail premises in Temple Meads, we provide minimal-disruption roofing services tailored to your business's operational needs.
20 Years on Bristol's Period Properties Thomas Doherty has been working on Victorian and Edwardian roofs across Bristol for over 20 years. Redland's housing stock is his bread and butter — the slate profiles, the chimney configurations, the lime mortar requirements. This isn't general roofing knowledge picked up on modern builds.
Free 4K Drone Survey on Every Quote Every quote starts with a full drone inspection. You'll see exactly what's wrong in high definition before spending a penny. No vague estimates, no mid-job surprises.
The Right Materials for Period Properties We carry reclaimed Welsh slate and work in lime mortar on every period chimney we touch. Using the wrong materials on Redland's Victorian stock causes long-term damage — and we won't do it to keep costs down.
10-Year Workmanship Guarantee Every job is covered by a full 10-year workmanship guarantee. Fully insured, Checkatrade vetted, and no payment until the work is complete and you're satisfied.
TD Roofing Contractors is run by Thomas Doherty — an Irish tradesman who came to Bristol over 20 years ago and built his reputation street by street across BS6, BS7, and BS8.
Thomas is on every job. There's no call centre dispatching strangers, no junior crew while he's elsewhere. When TD Roofing arrives at your Redland property, you're getting a small, experienced team that's worked together long enough to hold the same standards.
Fully vetted on Checkatrade — every review independently verified and unfiltered.
In most cases yes. We carry a stock of reclaimed Welsh slate and can source specific sizes and thicknesses for matching work across BS6. Spanish slate is cheaper but looks visually different — we won't substitute it without telling you first.
Yes, over time. Hard cement mortar traps moisture in Victorian brickwork and causes the brick face to break apart through freeze-thaw cycles. We can hack out the old cement and repoint correctly in lime mortar, which is flexible, breathable, and appropriate for the age of the building.
The main signs are slates slipping regularly — particularly after wind — with no obvious physical damage to the slates themselves. A drone survey will show us the pattern across the whole roof and confirm whether it's isolated or widespread.

Redland's housing stock is almost entirely Victorian and Edwardian, concentrated between BS6 5 and BS6 7. After 20 years working across these streets, here's what we find consistently:
Nail Sickness Across the Whole Roof The wrought iron nails used to fix Victorian Welsh slate have a natural lifespan of around 80–100 years. In Redland, most of these nails are now at or beyond that point. The result is slates that slip gradually — first one or two after a storm, then increasingly more. Once nail sickness sets in across a roof, patching individual slates becomes a losing battle. A full re-roof on new battens with stainless steel fixings is the correct long-term solution.
Failed or Cement-Pointed Chimney Stacks Redland's terraces typically have two or three chimney stacks per property, often rising well above the roofline and exposed to prevailing south-westerly winds. We regularly find stacks that have been repointed in hard cement rather than lime mortar — a common and damaging error. Cement is too rigid for Victorian brickwork, trapping moisture and causing the brick face to spall and crumble. Every chimney repoint we carry out in Redland is done in lime mortar, as it should be.
Leaking Lead Valleys and Flashings The internal valleys on many BS6 roofs — particularly the M-shaped or butterfly valley configurations found on some of Redland's double-fronted semis — are sealed with lead that in many cases is original to the house. Old lead cracks, lifts, and develops pinholes. Water tracks silently behind it for months before appearing on a ceiling. We inspect all lead junctions as part of our drone survey on every quote.
Flat Roof Extensions Reaching End of Life The 1960s and 70s saw a wave of rear extensions across Redland's Victorian stock, most of them flat-roofed in torch-on felt. That felt now has a typical remaining lifespan of zero to five years. If your back room ceiling is showing damp patches or your flat roof is blistering and cracking, it's not a repair situation — it needs recovering.
