Full Chimney Stack Rebuild
Where structural deterioration is too advanced for repair — spalling brickwork, failed core, or movement at the base of the stack — we carry out full or partial rebuilds in matching brick with lime mortar throughout.
Chimney Capping & Cowls
Unused flues left open allow water, birds, and debris directly into the roof space. We cap unused flues correctly — ventilated where required to prevent condensation — without compromising the appearance of the stack.

We never use Portland cement on a period Clifton property. Lime mortar is the only correct specification for pre-1920 brickwork and it's what we use on every chimney repoint we carry out in BS8 without exception.

Cement Repointing on Victorian and Georgian Brickwork
The most damaging and most common finding across BS8. A previous contractor — often decades ago — repointed Clifton's soft Georgian or Victorian brickwork in hard Portland cement. The cement is too rigid. It cracks under thermal movement, traps moisture behind the joint face, and causes the brick faces to spall and blow off over repeated freeze-thaw cycles. We cut out all cement contamination and repoint in lime mortar — the only specification appropriate for pre-1920 masonry in a Bristol Conservation Area.
Failed Lead Flashing at the Roof Junction
Original lead on Clifton's period properties — particularly where the stack rises through a slate roof with a swept or soaker valley junction — is frequently cracked or lifted at the dressed edges. Water enters at the flashing line and tracks down through the roof structure before appearing internally. A drone survey maps the full flashing condition before we quote.
Flaunching Failure and Loose Chimney Pots
Clifton's tall chimney stacks are subject to significant wind loading from the exposed south-westerly direction. Flaunching that has cracked or shrunk allows pots to rock and eventually topple — a significant safety risk on a busy Clifton street below. We treat loose chimney pots as a priority and always specify new flaunching as part of any pot replacement.
Spalling Brickwork from Long-Term Moisture Ingress
On some of Clifton's older Georgian stacks, moisture ingress through failed pointing or flashing has been occurring for long enough that the brick faces are actively deteriorating — spalling, crumbling, and in some cases exposing the internal brick core. At this stage, repair requires careful assessment of how far the deterioration has progressed before deciding between targeted repair and partial rebuild.
My chimney was repointed a few years ago but it's still leaking — why?
Almost certainly because it was repointed in cement rather than lime mortar. Cement repointing on Victorian or Georgian brickwork cracks under thermal movement, allowing water in through the joint while appearing sound on the surface. We cut out the cement entirely and repoint in lime — the only lasting solution on a period Clifton property.
Do I need Conservation Area Consent for chimney repairs?
For like-for-like repair work — repointing, flashing replacement, flaunching — no consent is required. For changes to chimney pot style or height, or for full stack rebuilds where the appearance changes, it's worth checking with Bristol City Council's planning department. We advise on this as part of every survey.
